F1 2026 Rankings: Mercedes stun Bahrain, Red Bull battles “New Meta”
The evening sun of the desert has already covered more than half of the final 2026 pre-season test in Bahrain, and the test is officially closed. The massive 2026 regulation revision with 50/50 balances of power. Indeed, the hybrids and active aero no longer feature with teams racing to lap times. Rather, they are adjusting to a new technical environment.
The status is the following in case you are tracking performance data about your sim setup or just looking at the initial trends until the season opener in Melbourne.
Mercedes: First Point of Reference
Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team has presented what seems to be the most comprehensive package available on the grid.
Yesterday, George Russell finished the fastest time of the whole test at 1:33.459. Outright pace is not all of the story, however. The W17 appears to be equal to the new aero active loads. The porpoising was an issue with other competitors, but Mercedes platform seemed to be smooth and predictable.
Driver Effect:
Rookie Kimi Antonelli was as stable as Russell in the long-run. That contributes to the impression that the hybrid reset of Mercedes is well-developed.
Technical Background:
The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile has also been asked by competitors regarding the engine compression ratios. However, no official order has been made as yet.
Red Bull: Phase or Transition?
Red Bull Racing is in the biggest question mark for early 2026. Max Verstappen has emerged to express his frustration with the new structure of the regulations. Moreover, on-track data are added to the fact that the team still works on optimising the deployment of energy in the new hybrid format.
Operational Problem:
On Wednesday, the driver of the operational challenge, Isack Hadjar, first completed 13 laps. Consequently, due to the persistent water leak in the Red Bull-Ford powertrain.
Assessment:
Although this could be the case, certain analysts believe that the team could be working on performance visibility. Even during testing, there are garage pointers who explain that there is real adaptation work in progress. As they are, they appear to be the fourth-fastest overall.
Ferrari: Formatted and Timed
On the one hand, Mercedes is very self-confident. Scudero Ferrari, on the contrary, is very quiet. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton have been concerned with the long-run simulation.
Reliability Indicator:
McLaren along with Ferrari were listed among the best in terms of total mileage. Their 067/6 power unit has been extremely long-stinting.
Aerodynamic Detail:
This is a new mini-wing, which is located behind the exhaust. It is important to note that to stabilise the chassis when deploying the battery at high speed. Balance improvement is encouraging.
McLaren: Momentum Continues
McLaren has been on an upward trend. Oscar Piastri came close to the benchmark of Russell by only 0.010s. Moreover, internal feedback implies that the MCL40 is highly controllable at limit.
That is the feature that can be a decisive factor in the street circuit. Specifically, in areas where mechanical compliance and traction evenness are crucial. This kind of balance is expected to play to the advantage of Lando Norris.
The New Entrants: Cadillac and Audi
The 2026 grid also has lots of structural expansion.
Cadillac
Cadillac Formula One Team of the US has had a serious debut. The team located in Silverstone has covered more than 1,700 km during the testing, which appears to be technically prepared.
Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas are positioning the project at a company in the middle of the combat.
Audi
Audi Formula 1 Team has gotten off to a shaky beginning in Barcelona. Still, it has climbed since then.
When simulation was carried out, Nico Hulkenberg always placed the German works entry in the top ten. Nevertheless, the complex E-unit construction still has some software calibration issues.
2026 Competitive Structure (Tentative)
| Tier | Teams | Summary |
| Tier 1 | Mercedes, McLaren | Good speed and stability in operations. |
| Tier 2 | Ferrari | Long-run high consistency potential pace reserve. |
| Tier 3 | Red Bull | Continuous rebranding of energy management elite driver dimension. |
| Tier 4 | Cadillac, Haas, Williams | Well-developed mileage and intended development. |
| Tier 5 | Alpine, Audi, Aston Martin | Migration issue with new regulation system. |
Notably, Aston Martin F1 Team is still in a Honda transition. Besides, it has recorded the fewest total laps.
All Eyes on Melbourne
The Bahrain testing indicated a distorted map of fuel load and engine. Despite the two trends:
- Mercedes is mechanically good with the new aero platform.
- Ferrari-powered cars have a great degree of reliability.
Now that the Australian Grand Prix is in mind, on March 8, it can be concluded that the competitive order has changed due to the 2026 regulations.
Testing will be pushed early on the first weekend of racing and will indicate whether that is a sign of championship performance or not.
